The 14th SPIMUN conference is focused on the water- related problems.
The years 2005 to 2015 were proclaimed by the UN as the International Decade for Action “Water for Life”.
The Decade was launched by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with the following words:
“Water is essential for life. Yet many millions of people around the world face water shortages. Many millions of children die every year from water-borne diseases. And drought regularly afflicts some of the world’s poorest countries. We need to increase water efficiency, especially in agriculture. <…> And we must show that water resources need not be a source of conflict. Instead, they can be a catalyst for cooperation”.
Among the themes that are central for the “Water for Life” Decade are: scarcity, access to sanitation and health, water and gender, capacity-building, financing, valuation, Integrated Water Resources Management, trans-boundary water issues, environment and biodiversity, disaster prevention, food and agriculture, pollution and energy. Special aspects of these themes are included in the SPIMUN agenda 2010.
The 22 March is the International World Water Day. It is a good reason to emphasize attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate the sustainable management of freshwater resources during the Opening Ceremony of SPIMUN.
In his message on World Water Day 2009 the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stated:
“Water is our most precious natural resource. More than ever we need to work together to use it wisely. While the world’s growing population is consuming more freshwater, climate change is making less water available in many regions as glaciers recede, rainfall becomes less predictable, and floods and droughts become more extreme. Managing water carefully and balancing the varied needs for it is vital”.
SPIMUN Committee Sessions will take place mainly on the base of the Youth Environmental Centre sponsored by SUE Vodokanal of St.Petersburg (St. Petersburg Water Supply).
